Xender PC Version

Xender is basically developed for smartphone platform to transfer your data between devices at very high speed keeping in mind the security associated with the data and no data loss occurs. But we the so called “Techno geeks” are still on that phase where we need a big 15.6” display laptop or PC to manage our smartphones while transferring the data. To overcome that hindrance, Xender came out with the most simple and decent way to keep a close bond between your smartphone and our PC, the Xender web portal. This is the latest feature called Web Xender which will help you to connect your phone with Windows PC and will let you transfer files between the devices.

There is tough a small concern for unfortunate Windows phone user as there is no option for them to connect with the desktop version of Xender. For them the in-built windows 10 continuum would be preferred as an alternative. Windows phone users need not install Xender for secure file transfer as Windows offer a much better and secure peer to peer connection between windows 10 devices over other platforms. But having Xender will have a little edge over the preinstalled. Where as in case of iOS devices having Xender app is must as their OS structure do not provide transfer of data over Bluetooth due to security issue with any other platform besides iOS or MAC. Xender web works with all the versions of Windows 7/8/10. This application can solve a lot of mysteries when it comes to file transfer and sharing. The whole user interface is very simply designed and you just need to follow on screen instructions as to do whatever you want to (and allowed by the app). Everything is setup simply and you will experience very high user experience while using it. In fact, 90+% of its users are recommending it to other users, which itself a great deal

Steps to connect your device with PC/Laptop :

  • Both the devices should be connect with the same Wi-Fi network for Xender to work across platform. Update the version of Xender app in your handset.
  • Open the browser on your computer and type the following address : xender web
  • A QR code will be displayed for you to scan with your device to make a successful connection.
  • Open the Xender app in your device and press the green button to connect. From there choose the option to make a connection with your PC.
  • After successful connection you`ll see the Xender desktop interface with various tabs like music, videos and documents. The design of main interface is so refined that it even shows the OS version details of your device.
  • Under the music tab, there is also an in-built music player. You could enjoy the tunes while transferring your data.
  • With the upload button at top of each respective tabs, one could directly upload their data into the devices wirelessly.
  • The transfer speed of data varies with the Wi-Fi speed. But on an avg 5Mb/sec was observed.

Data Encryption Standards

Introduction

Data Encryption Standards or better known as DES is the block cipher which takes a fixed-length string of plaintext bits and transforms it through a series of complicated operations into another cipher text bit string of the same length. It is a symmetric encryption technique which means both sender and receiver use a shared key to encrypt and/or decrypt the data. The only problem with this technique is that if the key is known to others the entire conversation is compromised. In this, the block size is 64 bits it also
uses a key to customize the transformation, so that decryption can supposedly only be performed by those who know the particular key used to encrypt. The key basically consists of 64 bits however, only 56-bits of these are actually used by the algorithm. Eight bits are used solely for checking parity, and are thereafter discarded. Hence the effective key length is 56-bits, and it is always quoted as such. Every 8th bit of the selected key is discarded i.e., positions 8,16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64 are removed from the 64-bit key leaving behind only the 56-bit key.

1

History

The DES is the algorithm used for encryption of the electronic data. It was developed in the early 1970s at IBM and based on an earlier design by Horst Feistel, the algorithm submitted to the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) to propose a candidate for the protection of sensitive unclassified electronic government data. It is now taken as unsecured cause of its small size and a brute force attack is possible in it. In January 1999 distributed.net and the Electronic Frontier Foundation collaborated to publicly break a DES key in 22 hours and 15 minutes. The algorithm is believed to be practically secure in the form of Triple DES, although there are theoretical attacks. In recent years, the cipher
has been superseded by the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

2

The key schedule for encryption is the algorithm which generates the sub keys. Initially, 56 bits of the key are selected from the initial 64 by Permuted Choice 1 (PC-1) and the remaining eight bits are either discarded or used as parity check bits. The 56-bits are then divided into two 28-bit halves, each half is thereafter treated separately. In successive rounds, both halves are rotated left by one or two bits (specified for each round), and then 48 sub key bits are selected by Permuted Choice 2 (PC-2) i.e. 24 bits from the left half and 24 from the right. The rotations (denoted by “<<<” in the diagram) mean that a different set of bits is used in each sub key, each bit is used in approximately 14 out of the 16 sub keys.

The key schedule for decryption is similar, the sub keys are in reverse order compared to encryption. Apart from that change, the process is the same as for encryption. The same 28 bits are passed to all rotation boxes.

Security and attacks

The most practical attack to date is still a brute force approach. There are three theoretical attacks are possible which, while having a theoretical complexity less than a brute force attack, require an unrealistic number of known or chosen plain texts to carry out, and are not a concern in practice.

Brute force attack

For any cipher, the most basic method of attack is brute force i.e. trying every possible key in turn. The length of the key determines the number of possible keys, and hence the feasibility of this approach. For DES, questions were raised about the adequacy of its key size early on, even before it was adopted as a standard, and it was the small key size, rather than theoretical crypt-analysis, which dictated a need for a replacement algorithm. As a result of discussions involving external consultants including the NSA, the key size was reduced from 128-bits to 56-bits to fit on a single chip.

3

Advantages and disadvantages of DES

Advantages

  • DES has been around a long time (since 1977), even now no real weaknesses have been found: the most efficient attack is still brute force.
  • DES is an official United States Government standard; the Government is required to re-certify, DES every five years and ask it be replaced if necessary. DES has been re-certified in 1983, 1987, 1992.
  • DES is also an ANSI and ISO standard – anybody can learn the details and implement it.
  • Since DES was designed to run on 1977 hardware, it is fast in hardware and relatively fast in software.

4

Disadvantages

  • The 56-bit key size is the biggest defect of DES. Chips to perform one million of DES encrypt or decrypt operations a second are available (in 1993). A $1 million DES cracking machine can search the entire key space in about 7 hours.
  • Hardware implementations of DES are very fast; DES was not designed for software and hence runs relatively slowly.
  • As the technology is improving lot more day by day so there is a possibility to break the encrypted code, so AES is preferred than DES.
  • As we know in DES only one private key is used for encryption as well as for decryption because it is symmetric encryption technique so if we lost that key to
decrypt the data then we cannot get the readable data at the receiving end.

AES (Advanced Encryption Standard)

Introduction

AES is a new cryptographic algorithm that can be used to protect electronic data. Specifically, AES is an iterative, symmetric-key block cipher that can use keys of 128, 192, and 256 bits, and encrypts and decrypts data in blocks of 128 bits (16 bytes). Unlike public-key ciphers, which use a pair of keys, symmetric-key ciphers use the same key to encrypt and decrypt data. Encrypted data returned by block ciphers have the same number of bits that the input data had. Iterative ciphers use a loop structure that repeatedly performs permutations and substitutions of the input data.

6

Why AES came into existence?

AES is the successor to the older Data Encryption Standard (DES). DES was approved as a Federal standard in 1977 and remained viable until 1998 when a combination of advances in hardware, software, and cryptanalysis theory allowed a DES-encrypted message to be decrypted in 56 hours. Since that time numerous other successful attacks on DES-encrypted data have been made and DES is now considered past its useful lifetime.

7

Conclusion

  • The new AES will certainly become the de facto standard for encrypting all forms of electronic information, replacing DES.
  • AES-encrypted data is unbreakable in the sense that no known cryptanalysis attack can decrypt the AES cipher text without using a brute-force search through all possible 256-bit keys.
  • Security is no longer an afterthought in anyone’s software design and development process. AES is an important advance and using and understanding it will greatly increase the reliability and safety of your software systems.
